Primary congenital hypothyroidism: defects in iodine pathways.
The thyroid gland is the only source of thyroid hormone production. Thyroid hormone is essential for growth and development, and is of special importance for the development of the central nervous system. It was for that reason that neonatal screening on congenital hypothyroidism was introduced and is now performed in many countries. Defects in thyroid hormone production are caused by several d...

Mice lacking neuroD2, a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor involved in brain development, show growth retardation and other abnormalities consistent with hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis dysfunction. neuroD2 is expressed in the paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei, the anterior lobe of pituitary, and the thyroid gland. In neuroD2-deficient mice, thyrotropin-releasing hormone, t...
متن کاملBrain MR spectroscopy findings in neonates with hypothyroidism born to mothers living in iodine-deficient areas.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Iodine deficiency and hypothyroxinemia have a negative effect on the development of the central nervous system during fetal and early postnatal life. MR spectroscopy is a sensitive technique for detecting the changes of brain metabolites in various neurodevelopmental disorders. By using MR spectroscopy, we aimed to show the decrease in N-acetylaspartate (NAA) levels in ne...

متن کاملTransient congenital hypothyroidism after topical iodine in pregnancy and lactation.
A 6 week old girl with transient congenital hypothyroidism is described. The hypothyroidism was associated with multiple applications of povidone iodine during pregnancy and lactation. This case illustrates the potential hazard of using topical solutions containing iodine during pregnancy and lactation.
